Freedom and Paul, part 2

I originally thought this would be mostly about deliverance, but there was so much more.

Bond or free
1 Cor 7:21  Art thou called being a servant? care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather.
1 Cor 7:22  For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord's freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ's servant.
1 Cor 9:1  Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?
1 Cor 12:13  For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
Gal 3:28  There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Gal 4:26  But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
Gal 4:31  So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.
Eph 6:8  Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.
Col 3:11  Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

In all of these verses Paul refers to a status common in their day, bond or free. That is, the slave and the free man. There are three points of emphasis:
(1) The Gospel is open to all
(2) All believers are equal members of the body of Christ. Ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
(3) 1 Corinthians 7 has a very interesting and little spoken of principle
20  Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called.
21  Art thou called being a servant? care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather.
22  For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord's freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ's servant.
23  Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.
24  Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God.
The passage speaks of the servant and the free man, but the context includes marriage and celibacy (getting and staying married, and virgins). The principle is, Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called. You can make a change, but don’t rush into anything.  This does not refer to sinful behavior, which we are to forsake, but to position and status. Don’t leave your wife, don’t quit your job just because you are now a believer. He discusses the possibilities of this happening and how to go about it in this chapter.

Ye are bought with a price
We used to sing a little song:
I'm not my own, I belong to Jesus
He purchased me, I'm all his
Bought with a price, the blood of Jesus
I’m not my own, I’m his
Amen!

Liberty
Rom 8:21  Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
This is the resurrection of the body. I love it, glorious liberty! The Christian life and hope is not all about here and now. We are waiting for the coming of Christ and the resurrection of our bodies! See I Can’t Wait To See Jesus at the end.

Deliver
Rom 7:6  But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
Free from the law—oh, happy condition!
Jesus hath bled, and there is remission;
Cursed by the law and bruised by the fall,
Christ hath redeemed us once for all.

Once for all—oh, sinner, receive it;
Once for all—oh, doubter, believe it;
Cling to the cross, the burden will fall,
Christ hath redeemed us once for all.       (P.P. Bliss)

Rom 7:24  O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
See Romans 8

Rom 11:26  And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
Jesus is a full time deliverer!

These final three are powerful statements:

Gal 1:4  Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

Col 1:13  Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

1 Th 1:10  And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

This is the work of The Deliverer. Amen! It would do us well to study each of these deliverances: what they involve and how they apply to us. Again I say, Amen!

I Can’t Wait To See Jesus
I can't wait to see Jesus
In His glory as he bursts from the sky
I can't wait to be held in his arms,
and see the glimmer in his eye
Tell me how it's gonna be,
read it from the Bible again
I can't wait to see Jesus,
'cause Jesus is coming again

I can't wait to hear trumpets
'cause I know what they mean when they sound
I can't wait to cast off my burdens,
and feel my feet leave the ground
Tell me how it's gonna be,
read it from the Bible again
I can't wait to see Jesus,
'cause Jesus is coming again

I can't wait to see heaven
and to walk those streets of gold
I can't wait to check into my mansion,
and get my sleeping bag unrolled
Tell me how it's gonna be,
read it from the Bible again
I can't wait to see Jesus,
'cause Jesus is coming again

Oh, Jesus is coming again
Oh, Jesus is coming again
Jesus is coming again!

Postscript to Romans 8

I had wanted to include this in Freedom and Paul (part 1) but it wwould be too long. So I left it out, but felt pressed to include it as a postscript.

8:1  There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
3  For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4  That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
5  For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
6  For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8  So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9  But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. That is a harsh word. It’s not that the unbeliever is as bad as he can be. Some are very moral people, some do a lot of good and nice things. Yet they cannot please God. Why? They are in the flesh.

A good picture of this is Israel in Egypt. They were in bondage in Egypt. They were slaves of Pharaoh. While they were in Egypt they were unable to serve the Lord. They were in Egypt and not the promised land – the wrong place – and they were servants of Pharaoh, not Yahweh – the wrong lord. They were not able to serve God. They had to be set free from Egypt so they could serve the Lord.

While they were in Egypt they had no choice, no option other than to serve Pharaoh. But once they were redeemed they were free to choose to serve Yahweh or Baal. It’s not that they were as bad as they could be, they were simply in the wrong place (Egypt) and under the wrong lord (Pharaoh) and therefore unable to serve God.

The unbeliever is in the same predicament. He is in the wrong position (the flesh) and under the wrong principle (sin). He needs to be set free. When he believes in Jesus he is then in the Spirit and is now able to walk after the Spirit and so please God.

Or, in modern technology, he is like a cell phone with no service plan. He can punch in all the right numbers in the right order, but it just will not work. He can sincerely believe that it will work, but it will not work. The only number that works on a cell phone with no service is 9-1-1. Isn’t that something, all he can do is call for help! All the unbeliever is able to do is call for help. But when you call for help, God answers!

Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Freedom and Paul

As we come to freedom as found in Paul's epistles, we find that he is elaborating on what Jesus taught. This is powerful stuff. It is also very convicting! It is always convicting to read about how you should be living and then compare it to how you actually are living. But, rather than drag the Bible down to our level we need to let the truth transform us up to its level.
Rom 6:16-23 This is a very rich passage! Free occurs three times. But I think it can be summed up in the following three statements:

The principle:  Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Salvation: But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

The application: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

We are now free to do this.

Romans 8:1-16 Another rich passage! Free only occurs once - For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death  - but the idea dominates the entire passage.
In chapter 6 he says we were servants of sin but God has set us free to be servant of righteousness. This chapter goes deeper, to the root of the problem: the law of sin. He explains that there are only two possible spiritual conditions: in the flesh or in the Spirit. The unbeliever is in the flesh because he lacks the Spirit and consequently walks after the flesh, lives a life governed by the flesh. The believer is not in the flesh but in the Spirit, because he now has the Spirit of Christ, and is to walk after the Spirit.

Here is the amazing truth that Paul is presenting. The Christian is the freest person on the planet. The unbeliever is a slave to sin and unable to please God. He is not able to do it. The believer is in a completely different spot – he is free to please God, he is able to please God, but he is also able and free to sin.

Is this not what he says in v 12-13:
Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

A Christian is free to both walk after the flesh and walk after the Spirit. Freedom also has it consequences, which he clearly points out.

2 Corinthians 3: 17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
18  But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
This is another passage that deals with the difference between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant (see 1-16). This is very important to our understanding of the Bible and the gospel itself. There is life and sight and freedom in Christ.

Galatians 5:1-7
1  Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
2  Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.
3  For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.
4  Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.
5  For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.
6  For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
7  Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?
What has Christ freed us from? The Law. The Galatians were hearing false teaching that was telling them they needed to come under the Law in order to be pleasing to God. Paul tells them they have been made free from the law and should stand fast in that freedom. He has strong words here. If they or we return to the Law as a means of attaining righteousness he says:
Christ shall profit you nothing
Christ is become of no effect unto you
ye are fallen from grace
We have been freed from the Law and a works righteousness. we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith and all that avails for us is faith which worketh by love.

Galatians 5:13  For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
14  For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
15  But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.
16  This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
We have been set free from slavery to sin, from the law of sin, from the Law itself. We are free! But, we are not to use this freedom to fulfill the lusts of the flesh (remember, we are so free we can do that, but such a choice has dreadful consequences: Rom 8:12-13, Gal 5:1-4 and 21; I know this does not sit well with some, but we need to let the Scriptures say what they say), instead we are to voluntarily serve one another by loving one another and walk in the Spirit. Have you noticed how often he mentions the Spirit? How essential the Holy Spirit is to living the normal Christian life? This is not merely words and philosophy, for the kingdom of God is not in word but in power.

Paul has so much to say about freedom that I will need another post to cover the rest. Most of part 2 will cover what he says about deliverance.

We are free! Awesome. As free we should:
yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
through the Spirit mortify the deeds of the body
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free
by love serve one another
Walk in the Spirit

Erica's gone, am I glad it's quiet

Erica left this morning, heading back to her life in South Korea. It has been suggested that while it was nice, it is nice to have quiet again. My answer is, No. Let me explain.

Saturday night, January 29, she flew into Charlotte. Sarah and Keith along with their children met me and Mary at the airport to welcome her back home. After she arrived we all went to Azteca’s in Charlotte for a Mexican meal. The next Wednesday Mary met Mary K and Lucca in Columbia and brought them up here. On Thursday she went to pick up her Mom. That meant there was no bed left for me so I had to sleep at Sarah’s on Friday then a hotel for the next few days. Saturday morning Anne and Dave flew down. Daniel, Mary K’s husband, made it here the following Wednesday and Mark, Mary’s brother, joined us one night for supper. In case you are counting, that is 9 grandchildren, 4 daughters, 3 sons-in-law, 1 mother-in-law, 1 brother-in-law and 2 of us. I can’t count that high, but that is a lot of people!

Sure, it was loud and confusing and I didn’t get to sleep in my own bed for a week, but I loved it! What? Yep. And lots and lots of food!

Let me back up a bit further. At one point in my younger days (many, many, many moons ago!), I lived in a three bedroom house with 8 of us and 2 parents. We had to spend most of our time outside just to breathe! Then, Mary and I had 4 daughters and we home schooled. That meant they were with us all the time. We loved it. Ate all our meals together - what a blessing. We were never one of those parents that looked forward to school starting up again so we could get the kids out of the house. And, we never lived around family, so we didn’t have built in baby-sitters (a blessing, by the way).

When we moved to York, I encountered for the first time “family compounds.” That refers to parents who own a lot of land and give parcels of it to their grown children so they can build a house on it and everyone can all live on the same 5 acres. When I first learned about this, I laughed at this. After all, both of our parents were hours away, as were all our siblings. Our experience was, you grown up and move away. And here were people who grew up and moved closer to Mom and Dad!! But, as my girls got older I saw the benefit of that arrangement. Now, my dream is that we all lived on the same land, same street, or at least the same town. It would be so awesome to come home from work and have one of my grandchildren come over, “Can I eat breakfast with you, Granddaddy?”

That’s why we got such a big house - three bedrooms and a very large yard. When we’re here by ourselves we basically live in three rooms. We don’t need all this. We got it so our children and grandchildren could hang out with us. I admit, it is not big enough for us all to live here. And I do like sleeping in my own bed by day (remember, I work nights), and I like my own space. But I also really like having them around.

So, did I enjoy the brief visit but am now glad they are gone and it is quiet again? No. I mean, Yes, I enjoyed the visit, but it was all too brief and I am not glad they are all gone. I like having my girls around. I like having my grandchildren around. God has so richly blessed me and I enjoy the blessing!

Sleep, Bells, and the Rapture

Sleep
A lady came in last night and bought a two pack of Stacker 2 6 Hour Power. She said, “I have to work for 12 hours and got very little sleep.”
What is in this stuff? Taurine, Malic Acid, Caffeine, Glucuronolactone, N Acetyl, L Trosine, L Phenylalnine, Amylase, Protease, Lipase, Cellulase, Lactase, natural and artificial flavors. What?? Natural flavors? Just what does glucuronolactone taste like? This is real popular stuff. I’m afraid to drink what I can’t pronounce. Why don’t people just sleep?

Speaking of sleep. I don’t mind admitting, I need. Sometimes I lay back down for a little and wake up feeling human again! Now, all the women in my family can run on little or no sleep.

Bells
We used to have a bell on the door at work so we could hear customers entering. The big wigs told us to take them off because we had “tuned them out” anyway. First night with them and customers would be right behind me before I knew it! A friend suggested I hang the bells on the door and take them off before the managers come in - sure hope a manager is not reading this. So that is what I do. No one sneaks in on me now!Sure wish sin had a bell on the door…

Car Wash
The dirt washed off the cars turns into mud. Did you know that the mud pops at night as it dries? Like the marsh at low tide. Kinda cool.

Pawn Shops
I’m 65 years old and I have never been in a pawn shop. I was driving around with Aimee and said that and she said, “Granddaddy, you’re not 65!” Well, I have never been in a pawn shop. Am I missing anything?

My Computer
My computer is not well and I need to take it to somebody to get them to look at it. I’m told the geek squad will charge more to look at it than it may take to fix it. What to do, what to do?

The Rapture
I thought about making this a post in itself, but I will offer it here. I am here listing every single verse in the NT that teaches a secret, pre-tribulation coming of Christ to rapture the Church:

Hope that wasn’t too technical. Or too long!

Freedom and Jesus

Freedom. It just has a ring to it, doesn’t it? There is political freedom and personal freedom. The gospel tells us about spiritual freedom. There is so much in the New Testament about this that it will take several posts to cover it. I want to begin with Jesus – good starting point, right? Jesus has some amazing things to say about freedom.

Mat 6:13  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
I know this is not “free”, but deliver means “to set free”. The word here (ρυομαι, “to draw to one's self, to rescue, to deliver”; same word in Luke 1:74; in Rom 11:26 Jesus is called the deliverer) means to deliver, to set free.

Some of the modern translations like to translate this “deliver us from the evil one” but this is new, unnecessary and not in keeping with the rest of the NT. I encourage you to go through these verses on deliverance to see how broad this is: Luke 1:74; Rom 15:31; 2 Cor 1:10; Col 1:13; 1 Thess 1:10; 2 Thess 3:2; 2 Tim 3:11; 2 Tim 4:17; 2 Pet 2:7  And also John 17:15

This is a very large request. "Deliver us from everything You consider evil." Amen.

Luke 1:70  As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
71  That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
72  To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
73  The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
74  That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
75  In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
This is part of Zacharias’ prophecy and is a wonderful summary of the Old Testament promises of salvation (I think this helps us as we read the prophets).

Verse 74 contains the phrase about freedom: delivered out of the hand of our enemies. We need to be able to define and identify our enemies. The general explanation seems to be: that we…might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. Apparently an enemy would be anything that hinders that.

To serve the Lord does not mean to be a preacher, a missionary or a Sunday School teacher. It can include these things, but it is so much more. To serve the Lord means to live for Him, doing what He says, having His values and priorities.

So “free” does not mean unattached, no obligation, no responsibility, able to do whatever I want. It means freed from something (enemies) in order to do something else, namely serve the Lord. The person living for Jesus is free, while the one who is not is not free, but is in bondage, a servant of sin. Jesus came to deliver us from all our enemies so that we might live for Him in righteousness and holines!

Luke 4: 18  The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19  To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
Jesus is reading from Isaiah 61 and says this verse is fulfilled in Him.

deliverance to the captives and set at liberty are translations of the same word (αϕεσις - release from bondage or imprisonment; forgiveness or pardon, of sins [letting them go as if they had never been committed], remission of the penalty), and it is used mainly for forgiveness of sins. As in Luke 1, this is deliverance from captivity. The prophets promised it, Zacharias repeated it, and Jesus spoke of it. God must really want to set the captives free! The gospel is the year of Jubilee!

We used to sing a Scripture song (many of our songs were Scripture songs) about this:

This is the year of Jubilee 2x
When all the captives are set free
Come ye halt, ye blind, ye lame
Leap and shout for joy again
This is the year of Jubilee        (feel free to take a moment to sing!)

John 8:30  As he spake these words, many believed on him.
31  Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32  And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33  They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34  Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35  And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36  If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
This is spoken to those who believed on him. John includes many examples of people who believed in Jesus, but not unto salvation. Apparently it is possible to believe but not have saving faith. So Jesus offers a test, if ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed. And to his indeed disciples he says, ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

The Jews then claimed to never have been in bondage to anyone. It seems that sin makes you forgetful – they were then in bondage to Rome! And their history reveals several periods of bondage. Jesus ignores that and goes straight to his meaning, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. Jesus came to free us from sin. This is developed by the Apostles in the epistles.

Then he adds, And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

This leads Jesus to contrast a servant and a member of the family. This is relationship. Without Jesus the best we can be is servants, heirs of nothing. But Jesus says he can make us free men and actually members of the family! He takes us from servants to sons (see Heb 4), and heirs!

Jesus seems to be addressing two issues: slavery to sin that requires truth to free you, and this leads him to speak of slavery as a relationship - He will free us from this and make us sons of God. This is adoption and the apostles explain this in their epistles as well! The truth frees us from sin and the Son frees us from slave status.

Jesus came to deliver us and make us free. I have to ask myself, Am I walking in this freedom?

I Witnessed A "Dumb Crook News" Event

Last night around 3, 3:15 am I was outside sweeping the parking lot. (This is my favorite time, I get to be outside and there are very few customers.) A car pulls in and parks by the door so I head back inside. As I pass the car the passenger was putting on a toboggan. I had a strong impression that it was his intention to rob the store so I snuck a peak as I walked by to see if it was the kind of ski mask with eye holes. It wasn't. I entered the store, followed very shortly after by a police officer and then the man.

The man went to the cooler and opened the beer door while the officer and I talked. We watched the fellow because he was acting weird. As we watched, he stepped away from the cooler and stood behind the end of an aisle. He stayed there, making small, odd movements, all the while watching us as we watched him. This went on for a few minutes. Then he walked over to the candy aisle and then into the rest room. The officer and I both commented on this strange behavior. After a few more minutes he walked out and headed out the store. As he headed out I asked if he needed help finding anything and he said no. As soon as he walked out the door the officer went out after him.

After a few minutes I looked up and it looks like the officer is writing a ticket. Shortly after that they both come back into the store with two cans of beer (Bud Ice). The officer puts them on the counter and says, "These are yours. He took them from the cooler and I found them in his pants. Do you want to press charges or let him pay for them?" All the while the man is pleading with us to let him pay for them, that he has enough money to do this etc.

So I said, "Alright, you can pay for it."

He responds, "Can I go out to the car? The girl in the car has money. I don't have any money on me."

Since there was an officer standing there and since it is a costly offense for me to sell alcohol to underage people, I told him I would need to see some ID.

He said, "I don't have any ID." So I told the officer it was out of my hands. He made a call, charged the guy with shoplifting, cuffed him at the counter and tooks him out to the cruiser.

Even though I want to, I don't stand there and watch. But I realized this was taking a while and I looked out the window and the guy is refusing to be placed in the car! The officer is wrestling with him while his friend is standing nearby, arguing with the officer. So figure I better call 911 and get him some help but just then another police car pulls up, so I tell 911 that help has arrived.

Then his friend comes in to talk to me about all this. I tell her what happened - several times, that I tried to let him buy the beer but he had no money and no ID and therefore there was nothing I could do. She tells me she knoww I wouldn't sell beer with no ID (because she had already tried a while back) but that his ID was recently taken away etc. Then she says, "Now don't tell the police, but I don't have my ID either. I can drive, I just don't have it." I told her she better quit arguing with them because they might ask for it! But she kept on anyway, complaining about how much this was gonna cost to get him out etc. The recently arrived officer patiently explained who she could go to to complain (she was complaining that the arresting officer was being a ***** [not nice about this] ), and I told her he was, but to no avail.

I gave the officer my name and store phone number and a receipt for the shoplifted items. $3.19 worth of beer lifted with a police officer watching. That's just dumb!

Two hours later I realized, If this goes to court, I will have to go as a witness!!

You never know what's gonna happen in the middle of the night at Kangaroo Express!
